Oh The Changes That Occur

Technology is responsible for so many of the advances that have occurred in society and while we may not fully grasp all that technology has done to elevate us in the business world.  If we look closely though, we will see the small changes as well as the glaringly obvious changes that have taken place.  One of the changes that I think is important to explore is the creation of jobs, because technology is responsible for creating a completely new world of careers that we can choose from.  One position in particular I would like to focus on is that of the relationship manager.  This person is responsible for connecting the many different departments of the company but they are also integral in connecting with the consumer.

According to Joanne Cummings, the role of relationship manager, who is responsible for connecting the business with technology (2001), this might seem unimportant but in reality, a position such as this one is needed in the business and more specifically in the communication sector.  Having a relationship manager who understands the importance of technology for the survival of a company is key to moving a company into the 21st century.  A relationship manager is responsible for ensuring that they have the latest technology for their business as well as helping to usher them into the e-business realm (Cummings, J. 2001).  Aside from this important task a relationship manager is needed to help the IT department understand the ultimate goal of the company and onto the same page.  Essentially every company needs a relationship manager who can help facilitate between the many different departments that companies are comprised of.   Of course, the role of relationship manager goes one step further and they are needed in order to build a relationship with consumers.  They are responsible for creating lasting connections with consumers, which will create returning customers.   "Interactions between businesses and their key stakeholders are increasingly helping to shape businesses and their respective value propositions" (Crawford, M. 2014), this has become successful because of the creation of the facilitator role.  Without such a position, customer retention would be minuscule and companies would have a difficult time incorporating technology into their day-to-day operations.  In order to succeed companies need to have relationship managers who not only understand how business works but also how technology works and how important it has become today.

Finally,  The link below will take you to a video where Faisal Hoque discusses how information technology should no longer refer to company IT departments.  Instead they should be referred to as business technology departments because they have become intrinsically linked.  It is impossible to conduct business without considering technology and I think in order to create such a link one needs to have a strong management department that includes a relationship manager who can connect all of the individual links together.
